Russia must stop illegal actions at sea and pay compensation – Ukraine at UN

Russia must stop illegal actions and decisions, including the decision to close part of the Black Sea and, among other things, pay appropriate compensation to Ukraine, according to a statement made by the Ukrainian delegation to the UN.

The statement was distributed on Monday, August 9, at a meeting of the UN Security Council on the maintenance of international peace and maritime security.

According to Ukrinform's correspondent in New York, the Ukrainian delegation draws the attention of Security Council members to numerous flagrant violations by Russia of Ukraine's rights under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and other international norms and principles. Russia, in particular, has illegally deprived Ukraine of its opportunity to exercise its maritime rights in the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait, and has exploited Ukraine's sovereign resources in these waters for its own purposes.

The Ukrainian delegation recalled that in April 2021, Russia blocked part of the Black Sea in the direction of the Kerch Strait for foreign naval ships and state vessels under the pretext of military exercises. Russia "behaves illegally at sea" by blocking commercial shipping and obstructing naval vessels, the statement said.

It also notes that Russia is strengthening its military potential in the Azov-Black Sea region, in particular, by increasing the number of naval vessels, including those capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

"Russia must stop its aggression against Ukraine and restore respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders," the Ukrainian delegation said.
