Russia is fully responsible for the difficult humanitarian situation in the occupied territories of Georgia - Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, according to a statement issued by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry in connection with the 13th anniversary of Russia's armed aggression against Georgia.

The statement was published on the ministry's website on Sunday, August 8, Ukrinform reports.

Georgia's sovereign territories - Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia - have long been under Russian occupation as a result of Russia's defiant policy of aggression, which systematically disregards international law, the statement said.

"Ukraine reaffirms its consistent and strong support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders, as well as its commitment to a strategic partnership between our states," the statement said.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said that Russia was fully responsible for the difficult humanitarian situation in the occupied territories and must immediately ensure unimpeded access to them by international humanitarian and human rights organizations. It called on the international community to put pressure on the Russian Federation so that it fulfils its obligations under the Ceasefire Agreement of August 12, 2008, withdraws its military units from the occupied territories of Georgia - Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia - and implements other measures to demilitarize and deoccupy these Georgian territories.

In August 2008, Russia provoked a war in Georgia in which Russian troops, backed by separatist groups in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, seized a significant part of Georgia and bombed Georgian cities, military facilities and ports. The fighting was stopped only after the international intervention. According to the agreements reached, Russia was to withdraw its troops from Georgia by October 1, 2008.

After the 2008 war, Russia recognized the "independence" of the self-proclaimed "republics" of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The Georgian Parliament adopted a resolution "On the occupation of the territories of Georgia by the Russian Federation." The Georgian government adopted a long-term strategy for the peaceful return of the occupied territories. Most countries recognize Abkhazia as an autonomous republic within Georgia.
