Ukraine has most ambitious Association Agreement with EU – Lithuanian PM

Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte has said she believes that the implementation by Ukraine of an ambitious Association Agreement with the EU provides closer ties with Europe and opens the way to its membership in the European Union.

Simonyte stated this at the 4th Ukraine Reform Conference in Vilnius on Thursday, July 8, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"Ukraine has the most ambitious Association Agreement with the EU. [...] Its implementation requires efforts, because it will ensure Ukraine's prosperity and closer ties with Europe. It also paves the way for Ukraine to become an EU member one day. I really want to see this day - not because I am an optimist, but because this is what Ukrainians have chosen for themselves, and this is what they deserve," Simonyte said.

She added that this will require a lot of homework.

In this context, she noted that Ukraine's efforts to reform the energy sector were visible to many EU countries. She also welcomed Ukraine's desire to join the European Green Deal and the launch of the land market in Ukraine from July 1.

"This reform should have been implemented a long time ago. Now it is important that it is implemented correctly. Land reform can make Ukraine one of the agricultural superpowers in the world," Simonyte said.

At the same time, she noted that Ukraine also faces many challenges, and one of them is the introduction of corporate governance in state-owned companies, in particular, the transparent and fair appointment of top management.

In addition, she drew attention to the lack of progress in reforming the judiciary and the need to ensure the effective independent work of anti-corruption bodies, "which remains a top priority."
