Ukraine initiates joint statement on negative impact of disinformation on human rights
As Ukrinform reports with reference to the Foreign Ministry's press service, the statement initiated by Ukraine was made during the 47th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The statement identifies disinformation as a challenge to democracy, a significant threat to human rights, and a devastating factor in the global order in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Disinformation can undermine freedom of expression, discriminate against minorities, interfere with people's privacy, and impede the dissemination of information," the document says.
Ukraine and other signatories to the statement called on all stakeholders to consolidate their efforts to overcome disinformation by strengthening human rights, promoting the principles of equality and non-discrimination.
The Ukrainian initiative pays special attention to the efforts of states as the main guarantors of the exercise of human rights to strengthen the resistance of societies to misinformation.
The authors of the statement called on all states to refrain from conducting and sponsoring disinformation campaigns, to condemn such actions, and to combat disinformation with full respect for human rights.
