U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called on Germany to take concrete steps to reduce the risks the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline poses to Ukraine.

He said this during a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on June 23, according to a statement by the U.S. Department of State.

"Secretary Blinken underscored continued U.S. opposition to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline and encouraged Germany to take concrete steps to reduce the risks it poses to Ukraine and European energy security," the statement reads.

In addition, the parties emphasized the importance of a coordinated Transatlantic approach to addressing global challenges, including those posed by the People’s Republic of China and Russia.

They also discussed the COVID-19 recovery, responding to the climate crisis, a political settlement in Afghanistan, and the situation in Libya.

As Ukrinform reported, Blinken met in Berlin with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas to discuss Nord Stream 2, the situation in eastern Ukraine and ways to resolve it.
