Zhovkva, Ikonomov discuss situation in Donbas, deepening of relations with EU
“The interlocutors discussed the current security situation in eastern Ukraine, in particular, they touched upon the issue of significant increase in the number of troops of the Russian Armed Forces along the Ukrainian border and in the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbas,” the press service of the Head of State informs.
In particular, Ikonomov reaffirmed Bulgaria's unwavering position in support of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
Zhovkva praised the prompt and decisive reaction of the international community, partner countries, in particular Bulgaria, which helped prevent further escalation of tensions. The parties agreed on the importance of constant monitoring of the real withdrawal of troops from the Ukrainian border.
As noted, the parties also discussed the security situation in the Black Sea region and noted the need to strengthen regional cooperation at the level of partner countries.
The Deputy Head of the Office of the President informed the interlocutor in detail about the Crimean Platform initiative.
“During the conversation, special attention was paid to the practical cooperation between Ukraine and Bulgaria, as well as to the further deepening of relations with the EU and NATO,” reads the statement.
The Foreign Policy Secretary of the President of Bulgaria supported the deepening of Ukraine's cooperation with the EU and expressed willingness to work out relevant bilateral initiatives.
The interlocutors also discussed in detail the internal situation in both countries, including measures to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.
