Ukraine ready to get NATO Membership Action Plan - Stefanishyna

Ukrinform
Ukraine is ready to receive a NATO Membership Action Plan, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna has said.

According to an Ukrinform correspondent, she said this on the Right to Power program on the 1+1 television channel.

She stressed that there is no official document stating that a country in which there is a territorial conflict cannot become a member of the EU or NATO. In addition, she noted that today the geopolitical balance of power is changing all over the world.

"Today, NATO is formulating its strategy for ten years. [...] As Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, who is doing this work every day, I can confirm that Ukraine is ready for the Membership Action Plan. The president, the government and the parliament - and this is a unique situation for the past 20 years - are working to ensure that the European and Euro-Atlantic capitals could be ready for this," Stefanishyna said.

According to her, in order to obtain the MAP, Ukraine needs to implement a number of reforms, and their implementation has already begun, including the reform of defense procurement, the security and defense sector, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the rule of law.

Stefanishyna also recalled that the implementation of the MAP for North Macedonia lasted 20 years.

"That is why it is important for us to get the MAP that we deserved both in 1994, when the Budapest Memorandum was signed, and in 2008, when the decisions were made that Ukraine would be a member of NATO, but not today. I think that now is the historic moment when there is a consensus of at least 14 Allies on the materialization of the open-door policy. There is a new U.S. administration in which the U.S. President has a unique understanding of the Ukrainian file. [...] Ukraine and Georgia are the only non-member states of NATO that are responsible for security in the Black Sea region. That is why Ukraine's membership in NATO and the MAP is a big job that not only Ukraine needs. But Ukraine deserves this chance, and we are doing everything possible to make it real," she said.
