Improving cooperation and coordination in parliamentary diplomacy, in particular in international issues, providing a new impetus to our inter-parliamentary visits and contacts are among the goals of a visit of the speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey to Ukraine on March 5-6.

The current visit takes place almost eight years after the previous one.

Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Mustafa Şentop said this in an interview with Ukrinform on the eve of his official visit to Ukraine.

"This is my first visit to Ukraine as speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. You will see that after this visit we will raise relations between our parliaments to a much higher level," Şentop said.

According to him, inter-parliamentary visits and contacts will receive a new impetus.

"We will hold consultations on steps that will bring our countries closer in the humanitarian, cultural and economic spheres, and strengthen ties in these areas. We will consider ways to improve cooperation and coordination in terms of parliamentary diplomacy, in particular in international issues, as well as give a new impetus to our inter-parliamentary visits and contacts," Şentop stressed.

The speaker of the Turkish parliament also noted that the work of inter-parliamentary friendship groups had recently been intensified.

"I know that they [leaders of parliamentary friendship groups] have agreed to hold a joint meeting where the members of the friendship groups of the two countries will be able to get to know each other and discuss joint working issues. The parliament’s contribution to the cooperation between our countries will be discussed in detail at such meetings," Şentop said.

The Turkish politician also assured that his visit would take parliamentary cooperation to a new level.

As reported, the visit of a Turkish delegation led by Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Mustafa Şentop will take place on March 5-6 at the invitation of Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov. The program of the visit includes meetings with the president, the prime minister, the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, the foreign minister, and representatives of business and the diaspora.

The previous visit of the speaker of the Turkish parliament took place almost eight years ago. On April 4, 2013, the then Speaker Cemil Çiçek paid an official visit to Ukraine.
