Biden may take part in Crimean Platform summit – Dzhemilev

Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Dzhemilev says there are good reasons to expect that U.S. President Joe Biden will take part in the Crimean Platform summit, which is scheduled for August 23 in Kyiv.

He said this at an event dedicated to the Day of Resistance to Russia’s Occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the City of Sevastopol on February 27, Ukrinform reports with reference to the Crimea.Realities portal.

“The president signed a decree on the creation of the Crimean Platform. We put high hopes on this. Many countries of the world, including the member states of the Council of Europe, the United States, have already expressed their consent [to join the Platform]. Although I cannot say for sure whether they will be present at the summit on August 23 this year, but there are very good reasons to hope that they, including Joe Biden, will be here on August 23. In any case, we will work very carefully on this topic,” Dzhemilev noted.

He also said that he considers the creation of the Crimean Platform a significant step towards the de-occupation of Crimea.

In turn, the White House has not yet officially confirmed the participation of President Biden in the Crimean Platform summit in Kyiv.

As reported, the Crimean Platform is a new consultative and coordination format initiated by Ukraine to improve the efficiency of the international response to the occupation of Crimea, respond to growing security challenges, step up international pressure on Russia, prevent further human rights violations, protect victims of the occupying power and to achieve the de-occupation of Crimea and its return to Ukraine.

The Crimean Platform is to be launched officially at an inaugural summit in Kyiv on August 23, 2021.
