The newly elected leader of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany, Armin Laschet, says the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline must guarantee the protection of Ukraine's geopolitical interests.

He said this in an interview with Reuters.

"We [Germany] must guarantee Ukraine’s geopolitical interests and secure our energy supply through this private-sector project," he said of Nord Stream 2.

He also added that Germany bought gas from the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

"For 50 years, even in the aggressive times of the Cold War, Germany has bought gas from the Soviet Union, now from Russia," Laschet noted.

According to him, the German government is following the right course regarding the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

As reported, in December 2019, the United States of America passed legislation providing for sanctions on a ship involved in building the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. Due to the U.S. sanctions, its construction was suspended. However, the Russian side, with the consent of the German side, resumed work on its own, using the Fortuna pipe-laying ship. The 1,200 km long gas pipeline worth almost EUR 9.5 billion is 94% completed. The United States opposes the project, arguing that it will strengthen the Kremlin's grip on the European energy market while undermining Ukraine's security and economy.
