Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he was very worried about events in the United States related to the storming of the U.S. Capitol in early January.

He said this in an interview with Axios, which was broadcast on the HBO television channel.

"We are used to believing that the United States has the ideal democratic institutions, where power is transferred calmly. ... In Ukraine, we lived through two revolutions ... we understood such things can happen in the world. But that it could happen in the United States? No one expected that ... I was very worried … I did not want you to have a coup," Zelensky said.

He also noted that after such events, "it would be very difficult for the world to see the United States as a symbol of democracy."

On January 6, the U.S. Congress was to approve the results of the vote by electors who confirmed the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential election held on November 3, 2020. However, the meeting had to be adjourned for several hours due to protests by Trump supporters who stormed the building of the U.S. Capitol.

Five people were killed in the riot. Police arrested more than 150 people. Biden's inauguration took place on January 20.
