Kravchuk: Issue of occupied territories should be put to nationwide referendum
"The most sensitive issue today is the issue of Donbas and Crimea. Unfortunately, the annexation, the war in Donbas is perceived differently by Ukrainian political forces. Often, politicians, who actually support Kremlin policy, pretend to be patriots and express their opinions passionately on various platforms. And the people literally cannot understand what the common opinion of different political forces is, they split over the fundamental issue. It's about peace and war, life and death, people rarely split over these issues," Leonid Kravchuk said on the air of the Ukraine 24 TV channel, Ukrinform reports.
According to him, it may be necessary to put this issue to a referendum so that people say "how life should be organized in the Ukrainian territories that are not controlled by Ukraine today."
"I want to express the common position of the United States, the OSCE and Sweden on Ukraine. This is what has been said and is important for the possible formulation of the question for referendum: the search for a stable political settlement in Ukraine must be in accordance with the principles of international law, OSCE commitments with respect for Ukraine's full sovereignty and territorial integrity and independence within its internationally recognized borders, including Crimea and Sevastopol,” Kravchuk noted.
As reported, on January 26, the Verkhovna Rada passed the Law of Ukraine “On Democracy Through All-Ukrainian Referendum.”
