France reminds about condition for holding elections in occupied Donbas
“… the ultimate goal remains the return of the Donbas region to full Ukrainian sovereignty and the establishment of just and lasting peace in this region after the holding of free and transparent elections in compliance with international standards, the OSCE with respect to democratic elections and Ukrainian legislation,” the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs of France announced on Monday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
In particular, the Ministry’s press service answered a journalist's question, which contained a direct statement that holding elections in Donbas only after Ukraine regains control over these territories is a "rejection of the Minsk agreements."
In turn, the Ministry assured that France, alongside Germany, was continuing its efforts within the Normandy format to encourage progress toward implementing the Minsk agreements
As reported, local elections took place in Ukraine on 25 October 2020.
Elections were not organized and held in the temporarily occupied territories of Donbas and Crimea.
On August 30, the Central Election Commission, on the recommendation of the Joint Forces Operation Headquarters and regional military-civil administrations, approved a resolution saying that elections would not be held in 18 communities in Donetsk and Luhansk regions located in government-controlled territory.
