Ukrainian parliament amends electoral legislation

The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has adopted at second reading, bill No. 3485 "On the Introduction of Amendments to Some Laws of Ukraine on Improving the Electoral Legislation."

A total of 308 MPs voted for a respective decision at a parliament meeting on Thursday, July 16, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"The purpose of the draft law is to eliminate gaps and inconsistencies, correlate deadlines, simplify election procedures and unify them in order to ensure compliance with international standards for holding elections and to ensure the sustainability of democratic principles and procedures in Ukraine," the explanatory note to the bill reads.

Amendments were introduced to the Electoral Code of Ukraine, as well as to certain provisions of the current laws "On the Central Election Commission," "On the State Register of Voters," the Criminal Code of Ukraine, and other laws.
