Members of the United States Congress sent a letter to President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which they called for strengthening Ukraine’s energy security through the development of renewable energy.

Ukrinform received a copy of the letter from the U.S.-Ukraine Business Council (USUBC).

“We write to express our strong support for Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its energy security, including through the development of renewable energy. We urge your government to engage in negotiations with key industry players to ensure robust continued foreign investment and growth in this strategic sector," the letter reads.

At the same time, U.S. lawmakers recalled that Ukraine had made important steps to boost its energy sector. This includes attracting over $2 billion of foreign investment to the emerging renewables industry. In addition, the American company GE Wind Energy supplies wind turbines for 275 MWs of production capacity. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, in which the United States is a leading shareholder, has provided and approved financing of $600 million for renewable energy projects in Ukraine. The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation committed $400 million in financing and political risk insurance for a wind power project in Ukraine.

“We look forward to working with Ukraine to expand investment opportunities in key energy industries, including wind, solar, biofuels, hydropower, and geothermal,” the letter says.
