UN adopts resolution on access to medicines to face COVID-19, co-sponsored by Ukraine
In total, nearly 180 countries joined the resolution initiated by Mexico, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Sergiy Kyslytsya said in an exclusive commentary to Ukrinform.
"Mexico has demonstrated a good example of constructive and non-politicized approach to enhancing the engagement of the international community against the background of the global plight," the diplomat said.
In this regard, Kyslytsya recalled that individual countries, particularly the Russian Federation, had proposed their own draft resolutions which called for the lifting of international sanctions under the pretext of joint fight against COVID-19.
"Our stance is clear: only those documents that will be of practical importance in the fight against the pandemic can be credited with the consistent support of the UN," the Permanent Representative of Ukraine emphasized.
The new resolution, in particular, encourages the states to increase research and development funding for vaccines and medicines, leverage digital technologies, and strengthen scientific international cooperation necessary to combat COVID-19. In addition, the document calls on member states to prevent speculation and undue stockpiling that may hinder access to essential medicines and equipment.
"Viruses cannot be overcome with empty slogans. The UN should not waste its efforts on political spam cobbled together by some countries. We must consolidate around the things that unite us, not separate," the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN emphasized.
