Justice Ministry, Office of Prosecutor General sign memorandum of cooperation
The memorandum is intended to enhance cooperation between the two bodies to bring the Russian Federation to international legal responsibility for violations of human rights and international humanitarian law as a result of armed aggression.
The focus will be on enhancing joint work to build evidence base and provide information and legal support in the representation of Ukraine's interests in international judicial bodies, in particular the European Court of Human Rights.
Lishchyna noted the importance of cooperation between the Justice Ministry and the Office of the Prosecutor General in the process of bringing the Russian Federation to justice in the ECHR.
“Over past years, the prosecuting authorities have remained our reliable partners and we expect that the implemented initiatives will allow this cooperation to move to a new level,” Lishchyna said.
In turn, Mamedov stressed that the Office of the Prosecutor General is working to bring representatives of the aggressor state to responsibility for violations of international humanitarian law in the temporarily occupied areas in Donbas and Crimea.
“For the past six months, the Office’s Department has been working to investigate crimes committed in the context of armed conflict; it coordinates the work of law enforcement agencies in investigating such a category of crimes, cooperates with the International Criminal Court and provides facts of control of the Russian Federation both over the territory and over the illegal armed formations operating there and occupation administrations. Over the period of the Department’s work, two large-scale information reports on crimes of the Russian Federation have been sent,” said Mamedov.
