The Ukrainian government will work as usual until President Volodymyr Zelensky makes a "political decision" following a letter of resignation filed by Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk.

Honcharuk said in his speech in the Verkhovna Rada on Friday, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"There have recently been a lot of information attacks and manipulations against the government. The purpose of these attacks and manipulations is to sow discord within the team, to create the feeling that someone does not respect the president. It is not true. Our strong position is that we are one team and we want to remain as a team. That is why the government of Ukraine continues to work as usual until the president decides who in which position can work in the big team. This is a political decision that we expect from the leader of our political party," Honcharuk said.

He added that he had written a resignation letter addressed to the Verkhovna Rada speaker and that the president "has the right to submit it to parliament at any time."

"We are one team. We have all come to parliament, to power to change the country thanks to this man, thanks to Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelensky. We all respect him, and it is fundamental for us to have full trust within the team," Honcharuk said.

Honcharuk said on January 17 that he had written a letter of resignation and sent it to the president with the right for submission to the Verkhovna Rada.

The Office of the President confirmed receipt of the letter of resignation and stated that the head of state would consider it.

According to Article 115 of the Constitution of Ukraine, the prime minister, other members of the Cabinet of Ministers have the right to submit their letters of resignation to the Verkhovna Rada. The resignation of the prime minister, the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of a vote of no confidence in the Cabinet of Ministers results in the resignation of the entire government. In these cases, the parliament forms the new composition of the Cabinet of Ministers within the time limits and in the manner specified by the Constitution of Ukraine.

The government, which terminates powers before the newly elected Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine or whose resignation was accepted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, continues to exercise its powers until the newly formed Cabinet of Ministers begins to work.
