EU leaders are expected to extend economic sanctions against Russia by another six months at a meeting of the European Council on December 12, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reporter Rikard Jozwiak has reported on Twitter.

"Sanctions on Russia expected to be extended by 6 months at a European Council meeting tomorrow, according to an EU official," he wrote.

Jozwiak said earlier that the leaders of EU member states were likely to prolong economic sanctions against Russia in December.

In July 2014, the European Union imposed restrictive measures against Russia in response to the illegal annexation of Crimea and actions to destabilize the situation in eastern Ukraine. The measures were tightened in September 2014.

In March 2015, the European Council linked the effect of restrictive measures to Russia's failure to comply with the Minsk agreements. Since then, the EU has considered the extension of economic sanctions against Russia every six months.
