French President Emmanuel Macron has welcomed Russia’s return of three Ukrainian ships seized near the Kerch Strait last year.

According to an Ukrinform correspondent in France, this was discussed in a telephone conversation between the French leader and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, the Elysee Palace reports.

“The President of the [French] Republic welcomed the return of three warships, which had been captured near the Kerch Strait on November 25, 2018, to Ukraine. The gesture was expected and will help to increase confidence in the dialogue between Russia and Ukraine,” the administration of the president of France stated.

It is noted that the main purpose of the telephone conversation was to discuss preparations for the Normandy Four summit on December 9, 2019.

The Elysee Palace reminded that the French president had previously held the telephone conversations with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

As reported, Russia returned the Nikopol, the Berdyansk and the Yany Kapu Ukrainian ships in the Black Sea today, November 18.
