Representatives of the opposition political parties in the Verkhovna Rada of the ninth convocation will be able to chair the Freedom of Speech Committee and the Human Rights and National Minorities Committee.

“So far we have talked about two committees: the Freedom of Speech Committee and the Human Rights and National Minorities Committee. But they [the opposition political forces] have their own opinion on this matter,” Oleksandr Korniyenko, the chairman of the Servant of the People party campaign headquarters, said in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

He also recalled that the Servant of the People party considered the possibility of merging some parliamentary committees within the framework of the parliament’s reform.

“The humanitarian policy committee will be merged with the youth and sports committee. Our state-building committee will deal now with the issues of elections, construction, architecture, and housing. Previously, those were two separate committees – the Committee for State-Building, Regional Policy and Local Self-Government and the Committee for Construction, Urban Development, Housing and Utilities, while the elections fell under the responsibility of the Legal Policy Committee,” he explained.

As reported, the Servant of the People party proposed to reduce the number of parliamentary committees from 27 to 22.
