Ukraine signs UN convention on mediation

Ukrainian Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko has signed in Singapore the UN Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation.

"Friends, I have just signed the UN convention on mediation in Singapore," he wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday, August 7.

According to him, Ukraine has become one of the 46 signatories to this important international treaty.

Petrenko said that the implementation of the treaty would enhance the role of mediation as an alternative to arbitration for the settlement of international trade disputes and, in general, would have a positive impact on the development of international trade.

"Currently, the prerequisites for the introduction of a mediation institute during litigation are set out in the procedural legislation of Ukraine, and a bill on mediation activities, drafted on the basis of the best European and international standards, was tabled in parliament in July this year," he wrote.

He also said he had met with Singapore's Minister for Home Affairs Kasiviswanathan Shanmugam.

"It is nice that Ukrainian-Singaporean relations are strengthening," Petrenko added.
