Women will hold about 20% of the seats in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the ninth convocation, which is a significant step towards greater gender equality.

The Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN reported this on its official Twitter account on Tuesday, July 23.

“A huge step toward gender equality: following early parliamentary elections in Ukraine this Sunday, women will hold around 20% of the seats,” the report says.

According to the World Bank, women held 13% of the seats in the Ukrainian Parliament in 2018. According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, as of April 1, 2019, the worldwide average level for women's representation in the world’s legislative bodies was 24.3%.

The Equal Opportunities Inter-Faction Association in the Ukrainian Parliament reported that 87 women would work in the Verkhovna Rada of the ninth convocation, which made up 19.3% of the total number of deputies.
