Sweden and Poland as the initiators of the Eastern Partnership value the intention of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to make his first international visit to Brussels to establish contacts with the European Union institutions.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden Margot Wallström said in response to questions from students after a joint open lecture with Foreign Minister of the Republic of Poland Jacek Czaputowicz at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, an Ukrinform correspondent.

“We appreciate that the first visit of the new President of Ukraine will be made to the EU in order to establish contacts with the European Union. We are pleased about it,” Wallström said.

She noted that the purpose of the joint visit with her Polish colleague to Ukraine was to find out more about the new Ukrainian leadership and its intentions.

"I think it is still little known about this, but they are definitely moving forward, and we want to know their priorities," the Swedish Foreign Minister emphasized.

As Wallström noted, the EU countries praised the free and fair elections in Ukraine with an unpredictable result, therefore, it is important for the foreign ministries of Sweden and Poland to express support for democratic parliamentary elections, since many changes cannot happen in Ukraine before the parliament is formed.

"We will follow what will happen in Ukraine, which agenda will be formed, and our further cooperation will depend on whether it will include issues we value the most," the Swedish Foreign Minister noted.

In turn, Polish Foreign Minister Czaputowicz stressed that a joint visit to Ukraine with Wallström would demonstrate support for Ukrainian society and the country as a whole, not for political parties.

"We will support Ukraine and its goals in foreign policy for the restoration of territorial integrity. This is the basis on which relations between our countries are built today. Of course, it’s important for us that Ukraine continues to move along the path of reform. After all, the fight against corruption, the reform of the judicial system and respect for democracy should be the basis for the development of your state. This is a recommendation of the international institutions, and we share this opinion," Czaputowicz said.
