Ukrainian president tables bill on impeachment in parliament

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has tabled in the Verkhovna Rada a bill on impeachment as a separate procedure, his advisor and representative in the Ukrainian parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, has said.

He said this at a briefing on Wednesday, May 29, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"President Volodymyr Zelensky today handed over to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law on a special procedure for removing the president from office (impeachment). The promise that was made has been fulfilled," Stefanchuk said.

He added that a presidential address with a reminder of bill No. 7203, which cancels parliamentary immunity, had also been forwarded to the Verkhovna Rada.

"It would be honest if we passed these two bills together so that the president would have his procedure for removal from office, and the Verkhovna Rada would receive the level of immunity it spoke about," Stefanchuk said.

According to him, the legal departments of the Presidential Administration are currently working on other bills, in particular, regarding the establishment of liability for non-personal voting, or 'piano voting,' for deputy absenteeism, as well as liability for MPs' voting for bills where they have a corrupt interest or a conflict of interest.

"We are also inclined to introduce a number of bills that we talked about in our [election] program. They deal with people's power and the fight against corruption, in particular, the issue of support for those who expose corruption. These are other large blocks of questions that we will definitely pass on [to parliament]," he said.

On May 27, at a meeting of the parliament's conciliation council, Verkhovna Rada Chairman Andriy Parubiy said that President Zelensky had three days to table in parliament his draft law on impeachment, otherwise the parliament will consider a bill submitted by MPs.
