Sanctions against Russia to be extended in May or June, Poroshenko expects

The fifth president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko expects that the sanctions of the European Union and the United States of America against Russia will be extended in May or June.

“The essence of this question is whether they understand that the Russian war is aimed not only against Ukraine. When we defend Ukraine's sovereignty today, we also protect the security of Europe and its democratic freedom. In any case, I am optimistic and I believe that sanctions against Russia will be continued in May or June," Petro Poroshenko said in an interview with Die Welt.

He stressed the importance for the new Head of State to "behave responsibly and adhere to the principles we have set up over the past five years"

Poroshenko said that the most difficult question during his presidency was the issue of peace, the end of the war and the liberation of Ukrainian land from occupation. “We adhere to the Minsk agreements, Russia does not do this... The Minsk agreements do not restrain the Kremlin from new aggression. This is evidenced by the attack on Ukrainian ships in the Kerch Strait and Putin's attempt to lure Ukrainian citizens to Russian citizenship," the fifth President of Ukraine said.

The Head of State noted that the Minsk agreements secured all necessary steps for peace in Donbas: the withdrawal of foreign troops, as well as heavy artillery and tanks from Ukraine. "The next step is the disarmament of all illegal groups and the holding of free and fair elections in accordance with Ukrainian legislation. Most importantly, Putin put his signature under all these points. There is no other such document. All sanctions are related to this. The fact that sanctions are in effect is proved by the amount of money Russia has already lost, violating the Minsk agreements. But in order to implement the provisions of the Minsk agreements, it is necessary to increase pressure on Russia," Petro Poroshenko stressed.
