Tonight, the UN Security Council will hold a meeting on Ukraine’s language law, initiated by the delegation of the Russian Federation.

“A meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine’s language law will be held on Monday, May 20, at 22:00 Kyiv time,” Speaker of the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN Oleh Nikolenko posted on Facebook.

The diplomat added that the meeting would be streamed live on the UN website.

On May 17, the delegation of the Russian Federation appealed to the UN Security Council President with a request to convene a meeting on the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as a State Language.”

Ukrainian diplomats called it absurdity and Russia's attempt to turn the UN Security Council into a “late night show” since this body is designed to discuss issues of international peace and security while the Ukrainian language law has nothing to do with it.

The Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as a State Language” was adopted by the Ukrainian Parliament on April 25. On May 15, the law was signed by President Petro Poroshenko.
