Ukraine to change approaches to participation in Council of Europe due to attempt to return Russia to PACE

Attempts to return Russia to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) while Moscow continues to ignore the law are the result of departure from the CoE standards for the sake of current political goals.

Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Sergiy Kyslytsya stated this at the annual session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Helsinki on Friday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“There are those who insist on the need to recognize a new reality in Europe. But we will never recognize the reality in which Russia openly neglects all possible norms and obligations, and grossly violates the law. The new reality is the need to find ways to restore the rule of law in Europe. Unfortunately, what is happening today is the result of a systematic process of deviating from the established standards of the Council of Europe for the sake of current political goals,” the Ukrainian diplomat emphasized.

Kyslytsya noted that from now on Ukraine’s approaches to the participation in the Council of Europe would be pragmatic and deeply rational. He also added that Ukraine would not support steps “which have nothing in common with the protection of human rights, but only serve political interests under the guise of “protection of human rights”.

According to him, Ukraine is committed to the norms and standards that are fundamental to the Council of Europe, and expects the same approach from those for whom it has not yet become the rule.

As reported, on May 17, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe at the level of foreign ministers at the summer session in Helsinki supported the position that all member states should have the right to participate in the Organization’s statutory bodies, including the Parliamentary Assembly, and should also vote in the election of a new Secretary General of the Organization in June.
