Ukraine terminates two agreements with CIS

The Cabinet of Ministers has adopted the decision on Ukraine's withdrawal from two agreements within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the press service of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine has reported.

"On April 24, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the decision of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to terminate the Agreement on Mutual Preservation of Inter-State Secrets in the Area of Legal Protection of Inventions and the Agreement on Methodological Comparison and Creation of a Common Statistical Base of the Economic Union within the CIS," the statement reads.

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade noted that the Agreement on Mutual Preservation of Inter-State Secrets in the Area of Legal Protection of Inventions, signed on June 4, 1999 in Minsk, was drawn up to ensure legal protection for secret inventions that were created in the former Soviet Union.

"Today, there are no longer legal relations between the participating states of the agreement in this area [legal protection for secret inventions]. The agreement itself is generally obsolete and does not correspond to the current state of economic relations between the CIS countries," the ministry said.

The Agreement on Methodological Comparison and Creation of a Common Statistical Base of the Economic Union within the CIS was signed on February 10, 1995 in Almaty with the purpose of creating a general statistical base, the formation of which is provided on the basis of the list of indicators for inter-state exchange between the CIS participating states.

"However, in today's realities, this agreement [on methodological comparison and creation of a common statistical base] has long lost its practical value and is not applicable," the report said.

The ministry said that all necessary and potentially useful statistical information, in particular, economic information, is fully available in open access on the official websites of the statistical authorities of the countries.

According to the decision of the Government of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine will inform the CIS Executive Committee in accordance with the established procedure about the termination of the validity of the said agreements for Ukraine.
