Merkel invites Zelensky to Berlin

German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Ukraine's President-elect Volodymyr Zelensky have held a telephone conversation during which Merkel promised to continue to actively support Ukraine on the path of reform, according to Germany's international broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

"The German government's deputy spokesperson Ulrike Demmer said that Merkel had congratulated Zelensky and indicated that 'the result of democratic elections gives him a strong mandate'," the report reads.

The sides appreciated the close relations between the two states. Zelensky thanked the German government for support of Ukraine and expressed his interest in progress within the Normandy format.

"The Chancellor stressed that the German government will continue to actively support Ukraine on the path of reform and in its right to sovereignty and territorial integrity," Deutsche Welle quoted Demmer as saying.

According to her, Merkel invited Zelensky to Berlin, and the sides agreed to stay in close contact.
