UN Security Council to discuss situation in occupied Crimea

The UN Security Council will discuss the situation in the temporarily occupied Crimea on March 15.

The representatives of the Security Council members, other UN member states and non-governmental organizations will attend the Arria-formula meeting, dedicated to the fifth anniversary of the occupation.

“The meeting will focus on discussing the legal and political assessment of Russian aggression, as well as the consequences of Russia’s violation of international law for the European security architecture. Particular emphasis will be placed on the human rights aspect,” Oleh Nikolenko, the Spokesperson of the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN, said in an exclusive commentary to an Ukrinform correspondent.

He noted that, despite a number of resolutions, the human rights violations on the Crimean peninsula were ongoing, and the decisions of the UN General Assembly were not implemented. The Russian occupation authorities continue to harass activists, journalists, Crimean Tatars, and other residents of Crimea, who dare to speak out against the occupation tyranny.

According to the Ukrainian diplomat, the illegal actions of the invader should receive an adequate response from the international community.

"It is very symbolic that the situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine is one of the priorities for France and Germany, which assumed joint chairmanship of the UN Security Council in March-April," he said.

Nikolenko is convinced that the UN Security Council meeting will be "a good opportunity for the UN member states to familiarize themselves on the fifth anniversary of the occupation with the latest developments in Crimea and to discuss possible further actions in the context of efforts to de-occupy the peninsula."
