Volker: United States to support democratic Ukraine regardless of election results

"The United States strongly supports Ukraine, we are your partners in the reforms. After all, you define and conduct them [reforms], and we will stand with you now, during and after the elections. Regardless of their results, we will support peaceful, democratic, and prosperous Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, including the Crimean peninsula," U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker said at the 5th International Forum "Occupied Crimea: Five Years of Resistance," an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

He noted that Ukraine should ensure holding the elections in an open and democratic manner.

"I address the candidates and all citizens: make presidential and parliamentary elections the most transparent," Volker stressed.

The U.S. Special Representative also underscored the need to continue the fight against corruption.

Summing up, he said that Ukraine should continue to make efforts in all the sectors of society: to develop democratic institutions, reform judicial power and parliament, improve electoral processes, establish fair rules of the economy and the rule of law, and strengthen the security mechanisms as only strong society is able to protect itself.

February 27, the 5th International Forum "Occupied Crimea: Five Years of Resistance" takes place in Kyiv. Three panel discussions are planned within the framework of the Forum with the participation of the leadership of the state, representatives of the ministries, diplomats, human rights activists.
