Volker: US to cooperate with any democratically elected leader of Ukraine
"The starting point in this issue is that Ukraine is a democracy," U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker said at a telephonic press conference on Thursday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
According to him, it is usually not known who will win the election in a democratic country until the vote takes place. "In this case, we do not know who will be the winner," Volker noted, adding that the polls in Ukraine do not name the absolute leader of the race.
"So, the situation is now unpredictable. We do not know who will win. However, since Ukraine is a democracy, we will cooperate with any democratically elected leader," the U.S. Special Representative said.
He also stressed that official Washington would continue to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. "We will continue to maintain security for all Ukrainian citizens, regardless of their nationality or religion," Volker stressed.
