“We call on Russia to release Edem Bekirov, who is in grave physical condition and being denied medical care. We stand with all Ukrainian political prisoners unjustly imprisoned and call on Russia to release them immediately,“ the embassy wrote on Twitter.
In addition, European Commission spokesperson Maja Kocijancic also called for an immediate release of Bekirov.
"We expect an immediate release of Crimean Tatar rights activist Edem Bekirov, who was detained by Russia authorities. He is in ill health and needs daily access to appropriate medical care," she wrote on Twitter.
On December 12, 2018, Russia’s security forces detained Crimean Tatar activist Edem Bekirov at the border crossing from Kherson region to the occupied Crimea. He was going to visit his 78-year-old mother and relatives in Crimea.
