The law "On termination of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation” has been published in the Ukrainian parliament's Holos Ukrainy newspaper.

The law stipulates that "the Verkhovna Rada decides to terminate the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation adopted on May 31, 1997 in Kyiv and ratified by the Verkhovna Rada on January 14, 1998.”

"According to Article 70 of the Vienna Convention on the law of treaties, the termination of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation relieves Ukraine of any obligation to implement it and does not affect the rights, the obligations or the legal position of Ukraine arising from the implementation of the Treaty prior to its termination,” the document says.

As reported, the Verkhovna Rada approved the law on termination of the treaty on friendship with the Russian Federation on December 6. President Petro Poroshenko signed the document on December 10.
