Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko welcomes the approval of an important resolution of the European Parliament on the situation in the Sea of Azov.

The head of state wrote this on his Facebook page on Thursday.

"The Russian aggressor must understand that all his actions in violation of international law and bilateral agreements will continue to receive a strong and adequate response from the democratic community. The European Union, together with Ukraine, will resist the creeping annexation of the Sea of Azov by Russia and violation of the freedom of navigation," Poroshenko wrote.

He added that he highly appreciates the European Parliament support of the initiative to help Ukrainian ports and implement projects of socio-economic support of the Ukrainian Azov region. He expressed gratitude to MEPs for calling for additional targeted sanctions for the Kremlin's aggressive actions in the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait. "I hope for the practical implementation of these initiatives by the institutions and the EU member states," he said.

Poroshenko said that he would coordinate further joint actions to protect Ukraine's national interests during the forthcoming meetings with European leaders.
