Poroshenko enacts NSDC decision terminating agreement on friendship with Russia

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has signed a decree enacting the National Security and Defense Council's (NSDC) decision to terminate the agreement on friendship between Ukraine and Russia, the press service of the head of state has reported.

"President Petro Poroshenko has signed a decree on the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine of September 6, 2018 on the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. In accordance with the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, the proposals of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on the termination of Ukraine's Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, which was signed on May 31, 1997, were supported," the statement reads.

It is envisaged that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine should declare to Russia the desire of Ukraine to terminate the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, which was signed on May 31, 1997, in accordance with Article 40 of this Treaty, and to submit a draft law of Ukraine on the termination of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation in accordance with the established procedure for consideration by Ukraine's president.

According to the NSDC decision, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry must inform the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and other international organizations about Ukraine's desire to terminate the effect of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and Russia, which was signed on May 31, 1997, and about grounds for its termination.
