Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland has congratulated Ukraine on the opening of a new Consulate General in the capital of Alberta, Edmonton.

Freeland wrote this on her Twitter page.

"As someone who grew up in Edmonton, and as a proud Canadian of Ukrainian heritage, I am very excited that today, Ukraine is opening a consulate in Edmonton," Freeland wrote.

As Ukrinform reported, the official opening ceremony of Ukraine's Consulate General in Edmonton was attended by Alberta Premier Rachel Notley, Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson, Ukraine's Ambassador to Canada Andriy Shevchenko, members of provincial and federal parliaments, activists of the Ukrainian community, as well as Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, who arrived from Kyiv for this purpose.

The Consulate General in Edmonton has become the fourth diplomatic institution of Ukraine in Canada, in addition to the Consulate General in Toronto, as well as the embassy and consulate in Ottawa.

Alberta is home to more than 360,000 Ukrainians. This is about 10% of the province's total population.
