Poroshenko submits to Parliament draft constitutional amendments on EU, NATO membership

The corresponding bill No.9037 "On Amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine (on Strategic Course of the State for Gaining Full Membership of Ukraine in the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization)" was registered on September 3.

"The proposed legislative initiative is aimed at introducing necessary changes to the Constitution of Ukraine to implement the purposeful pragmatic course of Ukraine for gaining the full membership of Ukraine in the European Union and in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as strategic foreign policy priorities of the state," says the explanatory note to the bill.

The bill proposes to enshrine the course for European and Euro-Atlantic integration and the confirmation of European identity of the Ukrainian people in the Constitution’s preamble.

The explanatory note says that the Russian armed aggression entailed radical changes in the external and internal security of Ukraine and, therefore, necessitated the search for new mechanisms to ensure the national security of Ukraine and enshrining in the Basic Law the irreversibility of the civilizational choice of Ukraine, i.e. the European and Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine.
