Canada congratulates Ukraine on the 27th anniversary of independence and promises to continue to stand with the people of Ukraine in efforts to protect their sovereignty.

This is stated in a statement by Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau on the Independence Day of Ukraine.

"Canada continues to stand with the people of Ukraine in efforts to protect and preserve their sovereignty. We fully support the Ukrainian government’s efforts to build a more secure, more prosperous future for people across the country," Trudeau said.

He added that Canada and Ukraine had much in common. "Canada and Ukraine share common values, a commitment to democracy, freedom, and the rule of law, and close people-to-people ties. Over one million Canadians of Ukrainian descent live in Canada and contribute to our country every day," the prime minister said.

Trudeau recalled that Canada was the first western country to recognize Ukraine’s independence, "and today our states are united by a strong relationship." "On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I wish everyone celebrating a happy Independence Day," he stressed.

“Slava Ukraini!” [Glory to Ukraine] Trudeau added in Ukrainian.
