Poroshenko thanks Latvia for continued support for Ukraine's sovereignty

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has held a meeting with Foreign Minister of the Republic of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs.

This was reported by the press service of the head of state on June 20.

"The president expressed gratitude to Latvia for its continued support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, solidarity and assistance of the Latvian side in countering Russian aggression, as well as condemnation and non-recognition of the illegal occupation of Crimea. The head of state highly appreciated the consistent position of Latvia on the need to extend the EU sanctions against Russia until full restoration of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, including Crimea," the report reads.

Poroshenko told Rinkēvičs about the situation in Donbas, in particular, the ongoing shelling with the use of heavy weapons by Russian-backed militants. The prospects for the deployment of a UN peacekeeping mission in Donbas were discussed.

The parties also coordinated their positions on the eve of the Ukraine-EU Summit and the events within the framework of the NATO Summit in Brussels in July. The head of state thanked the Latvian side for the active support of the European and Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine.

Special attention was paid to the resolute opposition to Russian interference in the democratic electoral processes in Ukraine and the EU countries.

The Latvian foreign minister stressed the importance of an active international campaign aimed at the release of Ukrainian political prisoners from Russian prisons.
