Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker have discussed the release of Ukrainian hostages and the prospects for deploying a UN peacekeeping force to Donbas, the press service of the head of state has reported.

"The sides discussed the situation in Donbas and noted the importance of deploying a UN peacekeeping force to its occupied part," the statement said.

Poroshenko and Volker also emphasized the need for the immediate release of Ukrainian hostages, the press service reported.

In addition, much attention was paid to cooperation in the field of security and defense between Ukraine and the United States, the strengthening of Ukraine's partnership with NATO and energy security issues, taking into account the risks borne by the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project.

The parties also discussed the progress and support of Ukraine on the path of reforms, in particular in the fight against corruption, the press service added.

On May 14, Volker began his seventh visit to Ukraine over the past eight months. He has already visited Donbas as part of the visit.
