Merkel, Putin discuss peacekeepers in Donbas
They spoke about the U.S. withdrawal from a nuclear agreement with Iran and a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, German Government Spokesman Steffen Seibert stated.
"Among the issues discussed by the leaders of the two states during the telephone conversation were the situation in eastern Ukraine and a UN peacekeeping mission in Donbas," he said.
The parties also discussed the situation in the Middle East after the U.S. decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) adopted by Iran and six other countries in 2015.
Merkel and Putin say that Germany and Russia are trying to keep the agreement on Iran between the remaining parties (except for the U.S.) and agree that it is extremely important to avoid further escalation.
As Ukrinform reported, on May 10, in Aachen, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, President of France Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the issue of a peacekeeping mission.
