The United States is committed to continuing cooperation with Ukrainian and international partners to improve the living conditions of people living in the regions affected by the Chornobyl nuclear power plant explosion in 1986.

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to the OSCE Harry Kamian said this during the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna on Thursday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"We look forward to continuing our work with the Ukrainian Government and our international partners to improve the lives of the Ukrainian people living there and those affected across Ukraine and Belarus," the American diplomat stressed.

Recalling the 32nd anniversary of the disaster at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, the US representative noted the progress in completing the construction of a new confinement structure for the destroyed reactor.

"The structure is designed to protect the surrounding environment for the next one hundred years and allow for the safe clean-up of Chornobyl," the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to the OSCE said.
