Verkhovna Rada recognizes ‘Putin’s election’ in Crimea unlawful

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has recognized that the vote in the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimea and the city of Sevastopol was unlawful and the results of this vote entail no legal consequences.

As an Ukrinform correspondent reports, the corresponding draft resolution No. 8168-1 "On the statement of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine regarding the non-recognition of legitimacy of Russian presidential election in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine – Crimea and Sevastopol" has been supported by 255 MPs.

"The results of this unlawful vote are null and have no legal consequences. They also cannot in any way testify or in any way be used as evidence of any change in the status of the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine – the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, as defined by the Constitution and laws of Ukraine," reads the statement.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine calls on the international community to impose additional sanctions on Russia and individual sanctions (restrictions) on persons involved in the organization and conduct of illegal vote during the presidential election in the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, as well as those involved in systematic violations of the fundamental human rights and freedoms in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.
