The heads of state and government of the EU member states have approved a political decision to extend economic sectoral restrictive measures against Russia for six months.

The EU leaders made the respective decision at a summit on Thursday after hearing French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel about the status of the implementation of the Minsk agreements, an Ukrinform correspondent in Brussels reports.

The formal legal decision extending sanctions will be approved next week.

The current sanctions remain in force until January 31, 2018.
