Canada does not intend to lift sanctions against Russia that were imposed due to violations of the international law in Ukraine.

This has been reported by Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland.

"We will not consider the lifting of sanctions," Freeland said.

She added that being in opposition she supported the imposition of sanctions against Russia. "Sanctions were imposed by the previous government, but with strong support from the opposition in response to Russia’s violations of the international law during invasion and annexation of Crimea, as well as the war against Ukraine in Donbas. Therefore, these sanctions are important," the head of the Foreign Ministry of Canada said.
