Polish Foreign Minister: NATO holds door open for Ukraine

NATO holds the door open for Ukraine. Ukraine could become a real candidate for NATO membership after the open conflict with Moscow is over.

Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said this during the Warsaw NATO Summit, an Ukrinform correspondent in Poland reports.

"The whole concept of creating a free and democratic Europe, which is cooperating within the EU and NATO, has not yet ended. There are still many countries that are in the process of applying for membership or considering such a concept," Waszczykowski said.

The Polish Foreign Minister added that NATO conducted "open door policy" towards Ukraine.

He noted that Georgia's membership in NATO was being actively discussed in the Alliance, while possible membership of Ukraine was still at the stage of "internal debate [in Ukraine] though many political forces are increasingly confident that Ukraine will become a NATO member in the future."

"We realize that Ukraine will be a real candidate for [NATO] membership when the open conflict between Russia and Ukraine is over," he said.
