Temporary detention centers reduced by more than half, says Dekanoidze

The number of temporary detention centers in Ukraine has been curtailed from 380 to 144, Chief of the Ukrainian National Police Khatia Dekanoidze has said.

“Understanding the urgent need in observance rights and freedoms of citizens, we have taken a decision regarding a significant reduction in the number [of temporary detention centers]. There were about 380 [detention centers], currently there are about 144,” Dekanoidze said at a joint sitting of the interior ministry and the justice ministry entitled “from new police to new justice and public safety”, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to her, consequently a number of employees of temporary detention centers have been also reduced from 3,500 to 2,200 people.
