Rada recognizes UPA, other Ukrainian formations as fighters for independence

KYIV, April 9 /Ukrinform/. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has passed the law on legal status and honoring the memory of participants in the struggle for Ukrainian independence in the twentieth century.

As an Ukrinform correspondent reports, the decision was supported by 271 MPs.

The law recognizes the persons, who took part in all forms of political, armed and other collective and individual struggle for Ukrainian independence in the twentieth century as the fighters for Ukrainian independence. In particular, the Article 1 of the law stipulates that fighters for the independence are the persons, who worked in the bodies of the Ukrainian People's Republic, including the Ukrainian Central Rada and the government of Ukrainian People's Republic in exile. In addition, the fighters for independence of Ukraine are persons, who belonged to the bodies of the Ukrainian State (The Hetmanate), the West Ukrainian People's Republic, the East Lemko and Hutsul Republic and the Carpatho-Ukraine.

In addition, fighters for independence are recognized the members of the military and paramilitary formations and units of the abovementioned authorities, as well as those, who belonged to the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, the Ukrainian Galician Army, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, the Carpathian Sich.
